Never use your primary address for signing up in websites

You are signing up for any website for its features. Often the website will ask for an email id so that it verifies it is a real person who has demanded its service and not a spam. In this case what one normally does is to give the primary email address (Like official email address, or your primary personal email address). It is nothing wrong in the website asking for your email address as it is its security mechanism to prevent spam/to save your personal needs from the website.

The problem can occur when viruses attack the website you are registered or any other means. Your email address is liable to be leaked to spammers. If it is leaked to spammers, then you may see your email addresses sending unforeseen messages and the messages you never typed. This will be most probably sent to your close friends (the spam are brilliant in getting email addresses from your contact list).

What you should be doing is create a secondary email address for these purposes. Follow some guidelines for creating the secondary email address.

  • Name your secondary email address entirely different from that of your primary email address: For example if your email address is like mike@somedomain.com, then try to create some email address like madangle@somedomain.com. Never give spammers food for thought.
  • Maintain entirely different password for the secondary email address: Also remember one more password for your login purpose (if the website requires login with a password etc) to the secondary email address.
  • Never email to your primary email address from your secondary email address: The chances are that your secondary email address is already compromised by spammers. So never ever send email from your secondary email address to your friends or to your primary email address.
  • Never store any contacts in your secondary email addresses: If you store some email addresses in your contacts, it is liable to be stolen by spammers. So never do this.

All that I can remember is this. If you get any points jot in the comments.
