Dostana Film Review

A very brave script to start with, Dostana really strikes. Screenplay coordinates well with the script. The cast has also been well chosen.

Sameer (played by Abhishek Bachchan) and Kunal (played by John Abraham) are unknown to each other before the start of the movie, and the screenplay makes them know each other in a fateful manner. Sameer is a nurse (not a short-skirted one. Watch the movie to understand the term), and Kunal is a photographer. Shilpa Shetty adorns a guest role for a song, acting as a model posing for Kunal.

Both of them looking for a house to live in coincidally comes to a same place where they are starting to act as gay. They are starting to live where Neha (played by Priyanka Chopra) who is ambitious about her career as Editor-in-Chief of a magazine.

Unwillfully they are starting to act as gay couple infront of Neha's aunty (played by Susmita Mukherjee) and Neha then later in front of the law. Law recognises them as gay couples. It is still controversial to talk about being a gay or not being a gay, but it is not the Independent reviewer's role to do so. So we will just restrict our discussions related to this movie.

Sameer narrates to curious Neha and her aunty about how they became attracted to Kunal (to make them believe). The scenes are really a highlight. It is very interesting and funny to watch.

The news of her son is a gay reaches Sameer's mom (played by Kirron Kher) and she is heartbreaken, comes from UK to US. She reminds of the cinema mom as in "Om Shanti Om", that too particularly in the song "Maa Dalaadla". Her role seems to be repetetive and very minimal. It is very uninteresting and to see an Indian mom approving a gay couple, speaking frankly from the ground. M aka Murali (played by Boman Irani) plays the role of Neha's boss. There is no much role for him in this film either.

And outgoing boss M welcomes Abimanyu (played by Bobby Deol) as the new boss, which should have come to Neha. Depressed Neha is advised by Sameer's mom. Neha talks in favor of Sameer and Kunal and for their relation. Moved by this Sameer's mom accepts Kunal as son-in-law of her son. Isn't this so dramatic?

Neha's new boss Abimanyu wants to redesign the magazine in less than two weeks, with the moral support of both Sameer and Kunal Neha does this. Abimanyu brings Neha to front stage and gives due share for the success of the new magazine-dressing. Neha slowly is impressed and gets attracted to him.

Neha is then introduced with Abimanyu's son (Abimanyu narrates that his wife has gone with some other). By this time Sameer and Kunal are deeply in love with Neha and starts impressing her. Once they know that Neha is falling for Abimanyu, both Sameer and Kunal starts advisor role for both Abimanyu and Neha to break the relation.

Even after repeated attempts of foiling their relation, Neha and Sameer gets closer. In a last attempt both of them advises wrongly to Abimanyu's son. Hearing this Sameer backs out. Sameer lashes out the truth that they both are not gay.

In the climax they both get to Neha and apologises for everything. Abimanyu asks both Sameer and Kunal to kiss each other. They does that. The story ends there.

Atlast Bollywood can stop worrying for any Heroin's availability if any. Choose from our sexiest Hero's and make such a story. Let the stories float. Ladies beware, it seems your days are over for dummy heroines. Now you can expect much more strong roles.

The background score is really impressive. It demands special note of appreciation. Desi girl is sweet and deserves attention. The song is nicely composed. Karan Johar is also well appreciated for bringing out such a nice film. But it has to be seen how the rural population accepts this film. The film is only expected to run in a more urban space.
