Panasonic DMC-LS85

The Panasonic DMC-LS85 is an entry level point and shoot digital camera announced this week. It has fairly base level features that will appeal to those on a budget.

The Panasonic DMC-LS85 has an 8.1 megapixel image sensor, 50 megabytes of internal memory, 4x optical zoom lens (with image stabilization), 2.5 inch LCD display and ISO range of 100 to 6400.

The LS85 has 21 scene modes and 4 flash modes. It is powered by AA batteries (2).

It will have a retail price of $119.99 USD when it hits stores in April 2009.

Panasonic today introduced a new addition to its acclaimed LUMIX line of digital cameras, the 8.1-megapixel DMC-LS85. Encased in a compact design and powered by AA batteries, the DMC-LS85 offers a powerful 4x optical zoom and bright F2.8 quality LUMIX DC VARIO lens at an affordable price.

Panasonic has incorporated its Intelligent Auto Mode (iA) into the DMC-LS85, a new addition to the LS series of entry-level cameras. In this model, iA is comprised of four major functions including Mega O.I.S, Intelligent ISO Control, Intelligent Scene Selector and Face Detection. Additionally, Panasonic’s Quick AF (auto focus) system allows the camera to automatically keep focus on a subject without the need to hold the shutter button down halfway, greatly minimizing the time needed for the camera to focus. A new enhancement for iA mode this year is a simple button located on top of the camera, which enables the user to enter the mode directly without going into the menu.

The DMC-LS85 records video in WVGA (848 x 480) format at 30 frames per second in addition to standard VGA (640 x 480). The WVGA motion picture fits a wide-screen (16:9) TV perfectly. Furthermore, a 2.5-inch large LCD features 230,000-dot high resolution and Intelligent LCD function, which detects lighting conditions and controls the brightness level of the LCD to offer a display with the most appropriate clarity in any situation. Slideshows can be accompanied by music, courtesy of the newly added speaker, so users can view or show their photos with greater impact.

The DMC-LS85’s internal memory has doubled in capacity, when compared to its predecessor the DMC-LS80, up to approximately 50MB. Due to the low energy consumption of the camera’s Venus Engine IV processor, battery life has also been extended to shoot more than 270 photos (CIPA) with two AA batteries.

Pentax Optio S10: 10 MP Camera

Most people, even professional photographers, are in need of a good ultra-compact digital camera. The Pentax Optio S10 is definitely small enough to be considered an ultra-compact - it just happens to be one of the smallest 10 megapixel cameras in the world. So as far as size goes, the Pentax Optio S10 can be considered an ideal pocket camera that is capable of taking very high resolution shots. Keep reading to find out more.

The Optio S10 is part of the popular S-series from Pentax, which has been around since about 2003. This line of cameras has been successful traditionally as ultra-compact cameras with affordable price tags. The S10 is no different, as this camera carries an MSRP of $249, but it can be found online for even less than that.

Pentax has become a leader in digital imaging with their innovative lens design, which has improved over the past 4-5 years. The Pentax Optio S10 is a great example of what a good lens can do for image quality. This camera produces very good quality photos. It is capable of shooting extreme close-ups as well as wide-angled shots. The super multi-coated (SMC) 3x optical zoom Pentax lens is very versatile.

The Pentax Optio S10 is part of a very competitive digital camera market that consists of powerhouse ultra-compacts like the Canon SD1000 and the Sony DSC-T2. The S10 can hold its own against these more popular models in terms of image quality and performance, but it lacks many of the features that these other cameras offer. This isn't to say that the S10 doesn't have any kind of functionality, but you're not going to find Bluetooth, optical image stabilization, touch-screen interface, or other advanced features in the S10. The S10 has just enough features to get by as a quality, budget shooter.

Design

The Optio S10 features an all aluminum body design that is available in either a silver/gray combination or a blue/silver outfit that is exclusive to Wal-Mart. Overall, the S10 has a "high quality" look to it. It also has just enough weight to feel sturdy and durable. The overall dimensions of the S10 are 2.1 x 3.4 x 0.8 inches, and it weighs a mere 4.6 ounces. Although the S10 is a budget shooter, this camera is anything but "cheap."

The front of the S10 sports the heart and soul of this little guy with an f2.8-5.4 38mm-114mm equivalent 3x optical zoom SMC lens. This lens is really high quality and has a good range. The only major gripe with the lens on the S10 is that it produces a small amount of barrel distortion in images when shooting wide-angled shots. In the S10's defense, this is actually quite common in a camera of this size.

Looking at the back of the camera, the first thing that you notice is the 2.5 inch LCD display with 232,000 pixel resolution. The screen is a pretty good size for being such a small camera. The S10 does not have an optical viewfinder, but it seems that many compact digital cameras are doing away with this feature nowadays.

Alongside the display, you will find the majority of the buttons and controls on the S10. The control configuration is pretty basic. And it's very similar to many other digital cameras, so it should be easy to learn the location and function of the buttons. The buttons on the back of the camera consist of the zoom controls, play button (reviews photos), a menu button, trash (green button), and a 4-way D-pad with center "o.k." button.

The only flaw with the design of the S10 was putting the USB connection inside the battery/SD card compartment. It would have been much more convenient if it were placed somewhere on the exterior of the camera instead of inside it.

One of the most useful dedicated buttons on the S10 is the "green button." When this button is pressed, the S10 will go into fully automatic mode. This mode will automatically adjust white balance, focus, aperture, and other attributes to get the best photo possible. This auto feature works quite well at getting the ideal settings for each individual photo.

Features

DIVx Movie Mode

The Optio S10 is a very capable video recorder that will take either 640 x 480 or 320 x 240 resolution video. The S10 offers three quality settings for both resolution levels. The higher the quality, the more memory you'll need to record the video. The S10 saves video in a compressed DIVx format, which helps keep the file sizes relatively small.

The S10 records video at 30 fps, which is DVD speed. The video feature includes sound, but reviews have shown that the microphone is a little weak at picking up sound. This camera will record video until the memory runs out, so you can get a lot of quality video from this little shooter.

ISO Correction

The S10 is capable of high ISO levels, but for the most part, using the high ISO settings will make the pictures extremely noisy. For people not experienced with ISO levels, Pentax has added the ISO correction feature to help them out. This feature will allow the user to preset the maximum allowable ISO setting (I recommend ISO 400), and then when the camera is put into auto-ISO mode, the camera will not go any higher than the level that you preset. This will ensure that each photo is as sharp as possible.

Shooting Modes

There are a variety of shooting modes available in the Optio S10. First of all, there are 11 scene modes including pet, food, kids, natural skin tone, and others. There is a built-in face recognition mode that will automatically adjust focus and aperture on the subject's face. The S10 can shoot images from within 0.2-0.49 feet with its super macro setting.

Digital Shake Reduction (SR)

Unfortunately, the Pentax S10 does not have an optical image stabilization system as many of its competitors do. The answer to this problem is Pentax's digital SR feature, which works to reduce camera shake and blurring of images. This feature works by basically raising the ISO level, which in turn speeds up the shutter speed. While this feature works all right, it does not replace a good optical stabilization system like the ones in most Canon and Sony cameras.

Performance and Image Quality

For the most part, the performance and image quality of the S10 are its greatest assets. That's a good thing, because those attributes are probably the two most important things to look for when buying a digital camera. Here is what some of the experts had to say about the Pentax Optio S10's performance and image quality.

TrustedReviews really liked the improved performance of the S10 over its predecessors. They say that "the S10's performance is as good as anything in its class." That's saying a lot when you consider the great cameras in this class, including the Canon SD1000, FujiFilm F50fd, and the Sony Cybershot DSC-T2.

They also liked the way that Pentax has improved the AF system in the S10. They said this regarding the AF system in the S10: "I would now rate as one of the best in a compact camera in terms of both focusing speed and accuracy, and in low light ability."

In terms of image quality, they liked the overall picture quality, thanks to the nice SMC Pentax lens. They went on to say that the lens produced "excellent edge-to-edge sharpness and minimal barrel distortion at wide angle." They thought that the S10 produced "consistently good results, especially in low light."

They also pointed out two negative aspects of the S10's image quality, including the relatively weak flash, and the image noise problem with photos taken at ISO levels above 100.

CNet Reviews

CNet pretty much agreed with TrustedReview's comments. They liked the performance of the S10 when compared to the competition. Their test numbers for the S10 were quite good, as the Optio S10 was able to reach shot-to-shot times of 1.3 seconds in good lighting and 2.5 seconds when using the flash. These numbers are quicker than both the Canon SD1000 and the Sony DSC-T2.

They agree that the image quality is also quite good. They said that "Pentax strikes the right balance between noise suppression and sharpness in the S10." The only gripe that they had with the S10's image quality was a "slightly worse-than-usual barrel distortion at its widest end."

Steve's Digicams

Steve's Digicams also agrees that the performance of the S10 is good when compared to the competition. They recorded a shutter lag time of just one-tenth of a second in good lighting. They also were able to get shot-to-shot times of 1.5 seconds, which is very close to CNet's numbers. These tests were conducted while using a 4 GB SDHC card.

They agreed with CNet in regards to a slight barrel distortion at wide angles, but went on to say that this is quite common for a camera in the S10's class. They liked the image quality of the S10 very much and said this about outdoor shots: "the colors were very vivid and had excellent saturation and exposure." They noticed some edge softness in photos when viewed at 100% and also some image noise when going above ISO 200.

World's Slimmest Digital SLR Camera from Olympus

Olympus has unveiled what it claims is the world’s thinnest, smallest digital SLR – the E-420.

Due in May, the 10 megapixel E-420 weighs 380 grams for the body and is only 53mm in depth. Width is 129.5 mm, while height is 91 mm.

The E-420 comes with a live view sensor, 2.7-inch screen and can take photos up to ISO1600. It also features ‘shadow adjust’ technology to deal with high contrast situations, face detection and also has buttons coloured to be visible to colour blind people.

Retail price has yet to be confirmed.

Despite the lack of an industry-wide trend to shrink their DSLR’s, Olympus Imaging Australia professional photography manager Lucas Tan said the company had taken the decision to slim down their consumer-focused models after conducting market research.

“We had a good look at the market some years ago, as to where the consumer digital market would go, and we realised that a lot of consumer digital camera users were actually upgrading into digital SLR-type cameras. And we’ve also … discovered that a lot of these users were not exactly very thrilled that single lens reflex cameras tend to be a little bit on the thick and chunky side,” said Tan

Tan also confirmed the size-reduction regime would also continue with new E-400 series cameras in the future, but would not flow on to higher-end models.

“For Olympus, we feel the initial single lens market is very clearly segmented into a category where the E-400 series sits, where the consumers demand the smallest and lightest cameras. But I think as you go into the other categories, like the enthusiasts and professional categories, users will be more likely inclined the buy cameras that are a little bit larger.”

In addition to the E-420, Olympus has also launched the Olympus Zuiko Digital 25mm f2.8 lens. A lightweight single-focus standard focal-length snapshot lens, 25mm lens is fully compliant with the company’s Four Thirds System DSLR design standard. It is due for local release in May, for RRP $349.

Kodak bolsters camera range with six new models

Kodak has today announced six new digital cameras to be made available between now and September, four of them marking the debut of its new 'M-Series'. The M753 and M853 are 3x zoom models with 7 and 8 megapixels respectively. The M873 and M883 meanwhile both sport 8 megapixels, a large 3-inch LCD and all-metal construction with the M883 adding face-detection to the specs list. Also on the way are the Z1275 - a 12MP 5X zoom with 'photographically-advanced features' and the 7-megapixel ZD710 superzoom with 10X lens.

Sony overcomes noise with Correlated Double Sampling on the CMOS image sensor and Clear RAW Noise Reduction in post processing. The result is photography that's incredibly clear and natural.

How Sony did it?

The extra-large image sensors of D-SLRs simply draw so much power that they can only be active at the moment of exposure, the same as film. This means the cameras incorporate a bulky mirror box and pentaprism, the same as film SLRs. Sony broke new ground in APS-class image sensors.Sony's latest Complementary Metal Oxide Semico nductor (CMOS) technology is so power-efficient that the DSC-R1 image sensor can operate continuously, whenever the camera is on!

That's how the Sony DSC-R1 can do what other APS-class cameras can't. Only the R1 delivers Live Preview that lets you evaluate your exposure, white balance and histogram BEFORE you take the shot! And you'll appreciate the far and wide zoom coverage, versatile composition and compact size!

Shooting far and wide.

Because the APS-class image sensors of typical D-SLRs are smaller than a 35mm film frame, 35mm lenses undergo a focal-length conversion of about 1.5x. This is great for tele lenses, because it converts a 200 mm into a 300 mm. But on the wide end, a wide-angle 24 mm lens suddenly becomes a medium-wide 36 mm lens (35mm equivalent)! Here's where the DSC-R1 has a decided advantage. Its zoom lens starts at an ultra-wide 24 mm with 5x zoom to 120 mm (35mm equivalent). The wide end is perfect for shooting in tight spaces or capturing landscapes, panoramic views and group photos!

What's more, image sensors are notorious dust magnets. Having a built-in lens means there's no opportunity for dust to collect on Sony's CMOS sensor!

Now you can see what you're shooting.

When you frame a shot, you want to see what the camera sees. Unfortunately, the optical viewfinders of most APS-class cameras can't give you a visual preview of how the exposure will look, can't preview color reproduction and can't show you in advance how the camera will handle severe highlight or backlight shots. And many optical finders can't even show you the entire image frame!

Because the DSC-R1 incorporates a unique, APS-C class sensor that operates whenever the camera is on, the R1 can deliver continuous electronic Live Preview of the scene. So you really do see what the camera sees.

Framing and preview modes.


Sony gives you two ways to enjoy Live Preview of the scene. Framing Mode presents a bright, high-contrast picture that maximizes your ability to determine who and what is in the frame. Preview Mode not only "stops down" the lens but also adjusts the shutter to show you the effect of your exposure settings in real time.

Now you can actually see the effect of aperture, shutter speed, white balance and ISO. So you can make adjustments before you take the shot, not after! You simply can't do that with an optical viewfinder.

Shooting high and low.

Sony offers Live Preview in the eye-level through-the-lens (TTL) electronic viewfinder. Using the viewfinder can give you a more stable shooting platform, with elbows tucked in to reduce camera shake. If you need to hold the camera above or below eye level, you can frame shots in Sony's free-angle 2.0" LCD monitor. It turns and twists through a wide range, so you can hold the R1 up, position it at your waist, lower it to the floor, even point it around corners to get your shot!

Finally, a full frame viewfinder.

The optical viewfinder of the typical APS-class camera gives you a limited view of the world. Literally. These viewfinders typically show just 95% of the lens field of view. Sony's Live Preview of the scene is a better way. Because it reads the actual image straight from the same CMOS sensor that takes the picture, you always get full, 100% framing!

Seeing with CMOS technology.

The DSC-R1 represents a dramatic departure for Sony. Where all our previous digital cameras have used Sony CCDs, the R1 uses a Sony Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor (CMOS) image sensor. CMOS technology is ideal for the DSC-R1 because it provides much higher output speed and consumes about 90% less power than a comparable CCD.

This combination of speed and power savings enables Sony's CMOS design to accomplish something no APS-class sensor has ever done before. It operates continuously. And that makes a world of difference.

World's first continuous-use APS-class sensor.

In a film camera, the film only sees your subject for an instant, when you press the shutter. The typical APS-class image sensor is so power-hungry that it must work the same way as film, only active at the moment of exposure. Ironically, this sacrifices many of the advantages of digital shooting.

Improving your view of the world.

An integral part of the R1 system.

Logic dictates that a lens for an APS-C class image sensor should be optimized for the APS-C frame size. Unfortunately, this logic eludes most previous APS-C class digital cameras. They rely on lenses optimized for 35mm film -- lenses that are far bigger and heavier than necessary. These cameras must provide a mirror box and pentaprism, which add even more bulk.

And 35mm film lenses undergo a focal length conversion of roughly 1.5x. That's great for telephoto shots, but severely limiting for wide-angle photography. Unlike the others, the DSC-R1 lens is meticulously matched to the specific requirements of Sony's APS-C class image sensor. You get an unbeatable combination of optical performance, wide-angle coverage, zoom range, and compact size.

The legendary lenses of Carl Zeiss.

Lenses can make or break picture quality. Simply stated, your pictures can only be as good as what the lens captures. Lenses are responsible for maintaining resolution, contrast, even illumination and consistent color from the center of the picture all the way out to the corners. With so much at stake, professional photographers are notoriously finicky about the lenses they shoot with. That's why professionals love Carl Zeiss® lenses. And that's why Sony chose a Carl Zeiss lens for the DSC-R1.

Superb coverage from ultra-wide to tele.

Putting a 35mm film lens on a D-SLR with an APS-size image sensor means creating a mismatch. The lens undergoes a focal-length conversion of roughly 1.5x. Suppressing glare and flare.

A feature of top-rank Zeiss lenses, the exclusive T* (T-star) coatings control internal reflections at the glass-to-air surfaces of the lens elements. This suppresses lens "flare" or "ghosting" that can sap an image of its contrast and punch. The T* coating means 52% less reflection than a standard Carl Zeiss lens -- and a whopping 82% less reflection than a conventional lens. You get notably more natural, more vibrant images.

Superb detail, corner to corner.

The ultimate test of lens sharpness is the Modulation Transfer Function (MTF) curve -- a rigorous analysis that shows how well the lens maintains contrast and detail from the center of the image all the way out to the corner. On the vertical axis is modulation from 0% to a perfect 100%. On the horizontal axis is the distance from the image center.   • 1.7x teleconversion lens converts the camera's 120 mm tele position to 200 mm (35mm equivalent). VCL-DEH17R, requires VAD-RA adaptor.

From high angles to low light, from fast action to 3-minute Bulb exposures, the DSC-R1 offers shooting options unlike any previous Sony camera. And exclusive Sony advantages in the lens, image sensor and viewfinder give you capabilities that D-SLRs can't match.

Framing your shot your way.

Sony believes the camera should enable you, not hinder you. That's why the DSC-R1 lens is designed to capture an unusually wide angle -- 24 mm -- along with 5x zoom out to 120 mm (35mm equivalent). That's why Sony enables you to csompose extremely high-angle and low-angle shots, using the free-angle LCD monitor as your reference.

And that's why Sony provides a Preview Mode to show exposure, white balance and histogram BEFORE you take the shot! These are capabilities no D-SLR can match.

Flexible focus.

The DSC-R1 provides a full range of focus modes.
  • Manual Focus takes advantage of a generously knurled ring on the lens barrel. As you focus, the electronic viewfinder and LCD monitor images automatically expand, for a closer look at the fine image detail you're focusing on!
  • Single Shot AF is ideal for subjects that are standing still. The Auto Focus process doesn't begin until you press the shutter release halfway.
  • Monitor AF speeds the shot, an important advantage in sports photography. In Monitor AF, the camera is always "pre-focusing" and doesn't lock until you press the shutter release halfway.
  • Continuous AF is ideal for unpredictable subjects such as sports, pets and little kids at play. The camera continues to track your subject right up until the moment of exposure.
  • One Push AF gives you an automatic assist during manual focusing. The button is easily accessible by your left thumb.
Sophisticated exposure control.

Because exposure is so important in image creation, Sony provides a comprehensive range of exposure modes, including Auto, four Scene Modes, Program Auto with Shift, Exposure Compensation, Shutter Priority, Aperture Priority and Manual.
  • Aperture adjusts in 16 steps from f2.8 to f16.0.
  • Shutter adjusts in 49 steps from 30 to 1/2000 seconds, not to mention Bulb Exposure for up to three minutes!
Choice of color modes.

One of the benefits of film photography is the ability to choose film emulsions. Because each type of film reacts to light differently, each offers a different color palette. In the same way, the DSC-R1 offers four different modes for color reproduction.
  • Adobe RGB represents a wide range of colors to support professional, four-color printing of magazines and brochures.
  • Standard sRGB is optimized for the most accurate reproduction on computer monitors and computer printers.
  • Vivid sRGB reproduces more intense primary colors, similar to a good reversal film.
  • RAW format brings the latent image into the digital darkroom. You can exercise exquisite control over RAW images without destroying the original data, using Sony's supplied Image Data Converter SR software. The software also converts RAW images into TIFF and JPEG files.
White balance.

Your brain makes constant adjustments, enabling you to recognize a white object as white whether it's under moonlight, candlelight, daylight or incandescent light. Unlike your brain, digital cameras need the help of White Balance. For this reason, the DSC-R1 incorporates five white balance presets, manual white balance and white balance tuning from -3 to +3. And unlike D-SLRs, the R1 enables you to preview the effect of your adjustments in the LCD monitor and electronic viewfinder!

ISO sensitivity.

The image sensor of the DSC-R1 is more than twelve times the size of the typical digital camera sensor. So the R1 is far more sensitive to light, providing you far more flexibility in low-light conditions. For this reason, you can continue to shoot handheld in circumstances where previous cameras require external flash, tripod support, image stabilization or and/or very long exposures.

Sony enables you to put this sensitivity to work by dialing up the camera's ISO setting. Where previous Sony cameras went to a maximum ISO setting of 800, the DSC-R1 offers ISO settings of 160, 200, 400, 800, 1600 and a phenomenal 3200!

Information, please.

The DSC-R1 viewfinder and LCD monitor present a wealth of shooting information. Because the R1 image sensor has a wider 3:2 aspect ratio than the viewfinder or monitor, Sony can position a full-time exposure display at the bottom of these screens. You always see status for aperture, shutter, Exposure Value over/under, focus lock, exposure lock and flash.

Selectable Grid Lines can divide the frame vertically and horizontally into thirds, for easy "rule of thirds" shot composition. Selectable Zebra Stripes give you on-screen warning of overexposure. Histogram shows you the range of scene brightness levels while you shoot. And R/G/B Histograms analyze color during playback!
