Our body is composed of Pancha Bhutas namely -air,water,fire,earth and atma
When we die...the body is symbolically returned to the basic 5 elements
A part of the body is returned to fire by burning the body
Air gets its part through smoke
A part of the ash is deposited in the water body..water gets its part
A part of ash is buried inside the soil..the earth gets its part
And i guess the 5th element..our soul is reunited with the universal soul

This is caught from Varkala beach, its also called some Papanasham or something like that. Lot of priests were there on the shore doing karma for groups of visitors from parts of the country.
