What is Aperture (Digital Photography)

The main function of a camera lens is to collect light. The aperture of a lens is the diameter of the lens opening and is normally controlable. The larger the diameter of the aperture, the more light reaches the film / image sensor.

Aperture is expressed in terms of f-stop. For example:- f2.8. The smaller the f-stop, the larger will be the opening of the lens. If anyone says Aperture value it is simply f-stop value. Normal digital cameras have a single aperture value.

Why is Aperture of a camera relevant?
Your camera will perform better in low-light conditions if it has a larger aperture (lesser the f-stop) as it can let in large amount of light with a large opening in lens.
